Isn’t it Time to Rethink the Campus Card?

College students have been using their college ID to access services and make purchases for years now. But the campus card has always had limitations; it allows you to process a transaction but cannot extend beyond that transaction. Even though the campus card has evolved through the years and new technology has been added to it, it has always remained just a card.

Shouldn’t the campus card be able to do more and interact with the student to provide an experience beyond the transaction? Isn’t it time to rethink the campus card? I think so. It is definitely time to move beyond the plastic and evolve once again.

Students today live their lives through their mobile phones, so Heartland Campus Solutions, a division of Heartland Payment Systems, rethought the entire campus mobile technology model to create a single point of access to campus life with OneCard Mobile. OneCard Mobile is the only mobile app that combines student ID functionality with electronic payment processing, access control, and campus life information to enhance the whole student experience.

Shouldn’t the campus card be able to do more and interact with the student to provide an experience beyond the transaction? Isn’t it time to rethink the campus card? I think so. It is definitely time to move beyond the plastic and evolve once again.

Shouldn’t the campus card be able to do more and interact with the student to provide an experience beyond the transaction? Isn’t it time to rethink the campus card? I think so. It is definitely time to move beyond the plastic and evolve once again.

Based upon our patent pending technology launched with our previous app MyPay, OneCard Mobile moves the campus card from the plastic card to a virtual credential within their smartphone. Once the app is downloaded, the student will simply select their campus and register their account to begin using OneCard Mobile. A PIN code or validation with their campus network credential is required to access the app.  A visual virtual credential is created at this point, which looks exactly like their ID card if printed.

OneCard Mobile will allow students to make purchases right from the app anywhere they normally would with their card. Students can select any of the participating terminals and simply swipe their finger across the card image within OneCard Mobile to validate the transaction. The system will check their registered OneCard balance or meal plan and authorize the transaction. For remote payment, the cardholder can select a OneCard terminal from a map of participating campus terminals, from a list, scan a QR code, or enter the terminal number directly into the app.

They may also enter dormitories, other campus facilities, and events where they have proper access through the app. Similar to financial functions, they will select the access point and swipe their finger across the card image to validate the transaction. OneCard Mobile is smart, though. It only allows students to see the locations where they have the proper access to enter. Geo-fencing is used to make sure an individual is in close proximity to the location they are attempting to enter.

Students can select to be notified as they approach a valid door.  They will receive a notification, and they simply acknowledge the notification to gain entry. No need to stop tweeting—OneCard Mobile will let you know when you are near your Res Hall door. It couldn’t be easier than that.

OneCard Mobile also provides features to help students manage their campus card account. Students can see their OneCard balance, view their history, purchase events, services, or meal plans, submit a photo for their ID, deactivate their account, view their account information, and much more. Everything they need to manage their account is right at their fingertips.

In rethinking the campus card, we wanted to step beyond the transaction and provide an experience to the student. We felt we needed to create a single point of access to campus life, a tool that can allow the student to connect with the campus and enhance services. And we have done just that. OneCard Mobile allows campus administrators to configure the application to provide campus life information to their students. They are able to choose any number of icons that will appear within the app and configure them to display mobile enabled web content or launch other applications within OneCard Mobile.

Students have the ability, through these configured icons, to view athletic event information, what the specials are in the dining hall for today, when the next bus will be coming, what theatrical productions or concerts are happening on campus and even purchase tickets to those events, connect with the campus through social media, and even call Campus Police quickly in an emergency. Any information the campus would like to include can be configured within OneCard mobile.

OneCard Mobile moves beyond the card. It allows students to do their transactions for payments and privileges from their mobile phone instead of their card, but more importantly allows campuses to provide an experience to their students beyond that transaction. Students can become connected with the campus, and they do not need to use multiple apps to connect. It’s all in OneCard Mobile, their single point of access to Campus Life.
